B B Q

Last Friday we had our summer BBQ at Victoria Lodge.

Many of the service users helped out on the day to make it very special occasion.  Vicky and Stephen served the food, Jacob and Chris organised the drinks, Rachel organised the raffle, and everyone else had a fantastic day.

Even the weather was brilliant, so warm and sunny.  Most people spent their time in the garden where the party really got going.

Everyone bought drinks and tickets for food then went to the table where Stephen and Vicky served them the food that they wanted.

Rachel sold loads of raffle tickets.  We had loads of prizes donated by our wonderful supporters which were then gratefully collected by the winners.

Here are some pics of us getting ready.

We are definitely doing this again next year.  It was such a good day.

Thank you to all those who contributed in any way that helped to make a very special day for us.  We will let you know exactly how much we raised as soon as we get the final figure.

The Hubb B B Q

Last week we had our annual BBQ at the Hub.  You missed a great evening.

Karen cooked for us and made sure that we had plenty of burgers and sausages.  We also played Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.  Unfortunately none us are millionaires.  Oh well, maybe next time.

Here is a couple of vids for you.

Next year you must come along and join in all the fun.  There is food after all

How our garden grows

We were sorting through some old photos when we came across some pictures of our brick garden.  We thought you might like to see how it has grown over the last few years.

Here are the pictures that tell the story of the brick garden.

Here is the result of some vandalism .  We set about rebuilding the garden
Here it is rebuilt and ready to plant
Clearing ouot the weeds and getting it ready for the proper plants
It was a lot of work but we got there!
Look at it now!  What a difference.

A lot of this was only possible because of donations from you.  Thank you very much.

Smelly Friday

Last Friday we had a very smelly day out.  We went to visit the Huge recycling centre at Waterbeach.  We met a friend called Jon at the Queen Mary Centre many months ago.  He showed us some really good ideas about things to do with rubbish.  We made bird feeders out of old drink bottles which are still hanging in our gardens.  He also gave us some pencils that were made from old CDs.

Jon works for Amey who run the 500 acre site at Waterbeach. He invited us to go and have a look around.  It took a few months but last Friday we went.

We had a great day and learnt a lot about rubbish.   Jon showed us all the huge machines that separate the different types of junk into nice neat bundles that are then taken away to be used again.

We also went onto the enormous heap of rubbish that couldn't be recycled.  We found this to be very worrying as it will cause so much pollution.  Jon helped us to understand how we can all make a difference by being careful about what we throw out and which bin to put it in so that it can be recycled and not thrown into the ground.

Here are some photos of the stings we saw.

Here we are ready to go outside.

This huge hill is all rubbish covered in earth.

This is a new site being dug ready for even more rubbish.

Here are some of the bundles of plastic ready to be recycled.

One of the sorting machines in action.

We are watching the machine do its work.

These things are huge

More rubbish being sorted.
As you can see, we saw a lot of very interesting things.  It helped us to understand how our own recycling can help to  make the country a much better place to live in.

We are very grateful to Jon for all of his time and would like to say thanks very much for a very interesting, if rather smelly day out.

Here is a link to the Amey website if you want to find out more.

Thanks again to all the guys at Waterbeach and don't hesitate to contact them if you want to take a group around.  We recommend it as a really good experience.

Website of the Month

This is the first post of a series that we would like to give to you.  We look at so many websites each week, some of them are very good and others not so much so.

We thought that it might be a good idea if we told you about some of the really good or useful ones.  If you have any that you really like, then please let us know by sending a comment or an email.

Our first recommendation is the Make Money Count site. Here is the link to it.

Make Money Count

This is a great site for anyone who needs help or advice about anything related to money.   There are sections relating to Benefits, Working, Bills and debt, Online, and others.

Each section is then divided into other parts that will help you to find the answers you are after.   It is a very easy site to find your way around and there is also a good search system on the site.

In each section there are many links to other sites like the Government benefits site and many others.  These are really useful and will help you a lot.  The Make Money Count site is a great place to start when you need help or advice.

We helped the people who made this site to make sure that it was as easy to use as it could be.  We were asked to review the old site and to make recommendations on how they could improve it.  We were then asked to look at the new site and say what we thought.  We are proud to say that we helped to make this site a really excellent resource for everyone.
