Sad news

We heard the very sad new last week that one of our volunteers had passed away.

Nina Mathers has helped out in the centre for many years.  We had all become very fond of her and will miss her greatly.

We have many happy memories of working with Nina which will help us to remember her for a very long time.

Our thoughts and best wishes go out to all her family and friends at this time.

 From all at Victoria Lodge.

September Love Your Home

Another month and another Love Your Home event at the Queen Mary Centre in Wsbech.

This time it was themed around Autumn.  Some of us made bird feeders for our gardens.  We were helped by Jon from Amey.  He showed us how to reuse old bottles for something very useful.  It's much better than throwing them away.

Jon works at the recycling centre in Waterbeach.  We are going to visit there soon to see what happens to all the rubbish we put in the blue and brown bins.  They sort it all out and reuse a lot for making new things.

There were lots of other things to do as well.  Some of us made decorations with pine cones, and even pumpkins made from old socks.

We had a really good morning.

The next event is on the 15th of November.  That will be all about making Christmas decorations from stuff that you might normally throw away.

Please come along and join in.

You can find out more about the waterbeach recycling centre by clicking on the link below.

sometings to look out for.

While we are looking at the trailer for the next Star Wars release, we found some others which we think are well worth looking out for.

Firstly, the next J K Rowling film, Fantastic Beasts and where to find them.  This is not in the Harry Potter series but is part of that world.

To find out more, click on the link below.

Fantastic Beasts on IMDb

Next we suggest that Miss Peregrines Home For Peculiar Children will also be an excellent adventure..  Use the link below to go to the IMDB sit for more information.

Miss Perrgrine at IMDB

Now for two fun pixar style adventures.

Trolls.

Moana

These both look like they will be great fun and suitable for all ages.

Finally, as it's October, we thought that we should include a spooky, witchy, kind of film.   One of our favourites is Practical Magic.  Check it out from the link below.

Practical Magic

There are lots more good films on the way so keep a look out and let us know about your favourites too.

Keep watching and stay in touch.

The Lodge Cinema. Episode 1

This is the first episode of our film reviews.  There will be a series of these posts which we hope you will enjoy and find useful too.

The first film we are going to review is the latest in the Star Wars series, The Force Awakens.

Here is a link to the film on the IMDb site.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Poster

Our Review

Score  5/5

We all really liked this film.  It has excellent effects which made it look completey real.  There is lots of action and excitement throughout the whole film.

The storyline of the film continues the saga really well.  there are some very unexpected twists to the tale and some new characters are also introduced which should make the next film well worth waiting for.

Overall, definatley worth watching.

Here is a link to the next instalment of the series.  It is going to be released in December.

Being really useful

We went to the September "Love Your Home" Morning at the Queen Mary Centre in Wisbech and helped to make kits for Reuseful uk

This is what thier website tells us about them.

Reuseful UK has been set up by members of the scrapstore community to support the reuse of unwanted resources for the benefit of children and communities. Clean reusable scrap materials (which businesses find hard to recycle so would otherwise be landfilled) are made available for children to play with through a network of independent 'scrapstores' across the UK.

Reseufuluk

One of our guys helped make up 60 bags of paper shapes for use by children in hospitals.

You can come and help too.  Here is a link to the Love Your Home leaflet.

Please come and see for yourself next month.

Making Money Count and Love your Home

Each month, we go and help out at the Love Your Home event at the Queen Mary Centre in Wisbech.  This is a good way to spend a morning meeting new people and making something for your home.  There are different crafts for you to try every month along with free refreshments.

We have made lots of stuff for our homes including signs for our garden, diaries, Note holders and lots of other things.

We help by serving people with drinks, posting leaflets, tidying up and keeping the room looking good.

Anyone can come to the event and join in with all the crafts.  You can find out more by going to the Making Money Count website here.

Here are some pictures from the event.

Making Money Count is a great service that can help you with any money related issues.  If you just want some advice or need more help to sort out debt problems, they can help.  Again go top their website for all the information.
There is loads of useful stuff on the site and also numbers and email addresses to contact them if you need any confidential, personal help.

Don't forget, come along to the next event at the Queen Mary Centre and have a bit of fun.

May Update

Hello again.

It's been a while since we started this blog and we have been very busy.  Sorry there haven't been any new posts lately.

It's way past time we let you know what is happening so this is a short post to keep you up to date.

We have sold some items on eBay recently including a very nice box set of the original version of Jeff Wayne's the War of The Worlds.  This had been in the centre for a long time but we have had no equipment to play it on (it is a special SACD set that needs a special type of player).  We decided to sell it and use the money to get something that would be used by our service user.  A very generous gentleman paid £30.00 for the set.  This will be put to good use very soon.  Thank you for your purchase sir.

The other item was an old Panasonic touch screen frame to make a 42" TV into a touch screen when connected to a PC.  We had updated this to a newer version to use on a new laptop.  Again a very generous person paid a very welcome £100.00.  Fantastic.

In other areas, we are busy making up baskets of sweets that we place in local offices for the workers there to buy.  This is a good way of raising a nice flow of income.  We are grateful for all the support that everyone is giving us.

Some of the groups in the centre are busy making items to sell from the centre and which may also be put up for sale on eBay.  We will keep you informed of any new items we have for sale as soon as we have them ready.

Thanks again for all your support.  The people who use our centre will benefit from any money contributed by you.  All the money is used to help the centre provide for our service users.

We have created this blog so that we can let you know about all the things that we are doing.

There is always something interesting going on here.  We will keep updating the blog to let you know what we are doing.  We also run a scheme to help us raise money for the centre called Rags2Riches.

This scheme alows us to sell items we have made like greetings cards and lots of other things that people in the centre have made.

We also sell very good quailty used clothing, books and many other items that have been donated to us. If you have anything that you would like to donate, we would be very grateful.

You can either bring your donations to the centre, or contact us at the email address below.
